About Winston Salem
Winston-Salem began in 1766 when the town of Salem was founded by Moravian settlers. Today, this area known as "Old Salem" is a living history museum that attracts many visitors. Old Salem has many preserved buildings, seventy percent of which are original structures, that are staffed by living-history interpreters to give visitors an idea of Moravian life in the 18th and 19th centuries. These interpreters, including blacksmiths, shoemakers, gunsmiths, and bakers, actually practice their trades while interacting with visitors. In 1849, the nearby town of Winston was founded and the two towns thrived as an industrial center that produced textiles, furniture, and tobacco products. The towns were officially linked as "Winston-Salem" in 1913. The city today remains true to its history while also flourishing as a business, medical, and arts center that offers something for everyone.
