Richmond car rental and Richmond, VA Accommodations Overview
Richmond is the capital of the Commonwealth of Virginia. It is an independent city and not part of any county. When you visit with your Richmond car rental, you will find the Greater Richmond Area, which includes Richmond, surrounded by Henrico and Chesterfield counties.
A brief history of Richmond
Before 1607, the Richmond area was inhabited by the Powhatan tribe. In 1606, James I granted a royal charter to the Virginia Company of London to settle in North America. After the first permanent settlement was established at Jamestown, Captain Christopher Newport led explorers northwest up the James River and erected a cross on one of the small islands in the middle part of the river that runs through downtown. The first settlement within the current city limits was in 1609 in the district known as Rockett's. By 1673, William Byrd I was granted lands on the James River that included the first settlement. It was named Richmond because the view to the River Thames from Richmond Hill was remarkably similar. The settlement was laid out in 1737 and was incorporated as a town in 1742. At the time of the American Revolution, Virginia was the largest of the 13 colonies. Richmond was crucial in deciding Virginia's participation in the First Congressional Congress and helped set the course for revolution. After the war, Richmond emerged as an industrial center and was a cross road of transportation and commerce.
