A quick look at city history
The Piedmont area of North Carolina has a storied history, beginning with the Saura and Keyauwee Indian tribes. The first known settles to the area were mostly Germans, Quakers of Welsh and English descent, and Scotch-Irish from the Northern Colonies. These brave pioneers settled the land beginning around 1740. Shortly thereafter, a major battle between the red coats of Lord Cornwallis, and the rebel patriots of Major General Nathanael Greene, took place in Guilford County. Cornwallis emerged victorious after a fierce two hour battle (he would later be defeated at Yorktown). By 1807, citizens of the area voted to create a new, centrally located seat of government. A 42 acre tract of land was mapped and purchased, and the town of Greensborough (named for General Greene) was born.
