A fun time for all ages
With multiple hands-on exhibits, the Chesapeake Children's Museum is a wonderful experience for children of all ages. Exhibits include Bay Window featuring live regional aquatic and land animals; Center Stage where children are involved in impromptu musical and dramatic productions; and Around the World where visitors can experience village life in Columbia
Grassroots beginning
It all began in 1992 when a group of local parents and child development experts came together to provide children's activities at community events such as the Quiet Waters Park Earth Day, Kunta Kinte Heritage Festival, and the Maryland Seafood Festival. The popularity of these event booths demonstrated a need for a "children's museum" - a place where, together, children and their parents or caregivers could enjoy hands-on educational exhibits
A museum was born
The Chesapeake Children Museum began in May 1994 where it had a temporary home in Odenton Elementary School. Exhibit areas were set up in the classrooms, with computer activities in the lab and visual expression displayed in the art room. Special programs and performances were planned around five themes, one for each week. The museum was a success, over one thousand visitors came. The Chesapeake Children's Museum than moved on to their rent free home in the Festival at Riva Shopping Center where it stayed for five and a half years. Participation continued in an increasing number of annual festivals and collaborations grew with various agencies and organizations - schools, scouts, churches, health centers, and other museums.
In search of a new home
After a number of temporary locations and in dire need of a permanent location, the WYRE building owned by the City of Annapolis was proposed. The 50 year old building surrounded by acres of city parkland at the head of Spa Creek seemed like the perfect place to set up. On June 2001 a longtime lease was approved. After 8 months of renovation inlcluding several building improvements and maintenance updates the Chesapeake Children's Museum was opened in November 2002.
A place for the community
The Chesapeake Children's Museum is used by many organizations in the community including Cub Scouts. Several workshops and programs are also available throughout the year targeted for different interest groups including toddlers, preschoolers, school age, families, parents and childcare professionals.
