Walking the halls
The Charlotte Museum of History is 36, 000 square of gallery space and features permanent and visiting exhibits. Settlement in the Backcountry is an exhibit the allows visitors to experience what 18th century settlers traveling down the Great Wagon Road into the North Carolina Piedmont felt. Learn about how the build cabins for shelter through displays the offer a glimpse into the backcountry life. Another great exhibit that you should check out is Solving the Rock House Mysteries, where you can become a history detective to solve histories of the past. This exhibit chronicles the restoration of the Alexander Homesite and explores the names and faces, and myths and legends, surrounding the 230+ year old home. The Rock House Mysteries illustrates many different ways to find out what happened in the past, how people lived, and what structures looked like. You are invited to discover sources, clues and evidence that have been used to solve some of the Rock House mysteries.
Taking a stroll
Take a stroll around when you travel with your Charlotte car rentals, the grounds are tranquil. You can also bring along a packed lunch. The Charlotte Museum of History has some picnic tables and benches along the little creek on the property. It would be nice to pack a small picnic and sit outside to eat during a break from the museum with your family.
A little history
Learn more about the Charlotte Museum of History when you travel with your Charlotte car rentals. The oldest structure on the museum location is the Hezekiah Alexander House, a 5000 Square foot rock house. Built in 1774, this structure is the oldest surviving house in Mecklenburg County and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. In 1996, the Hezekiah Alexander Foundation began to explore the possibility of replacing the 1976 building with a much larger museum to better meet needs and community expectations. Three years later, having raised over 7 million dollars, the new 36,000-sq. ft. museum building was complete.
Taking the tour
Your Charlotte car rentals highly recommend that you take the guided tours of the Hezekia Alexander Home site which happens every day at 1:15 and 3:15 pm. Make sure you sign up for the tour; it is included in your admission ticket. The tour requires traveling a little bit of distance from the main museum building (it is wheelchair accessible). The average visit to the museum and Homesite lasts three to four hours. Plan for one to two hours inside the museum, and at leaset an hour and a half for the Homesite tour.

The museum is open from 10 am to 5 pm Tuesday through Saturday, and 1 pm to 5 pm on Sundays (closed Mondays). Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for students and seniors, and $3 for children.
