About The Atlanta Braves

The Atlanta Braves baseball team was first established in 1871 and has been based in Atlanta since 1966. The Braves are a member of the Eastern Division of Major League Baseball's National League. First used in 1912, the name “Braves” originated from a term for a Native American warrior. The Atlanta Braves weren't always known by this name.

In 1869, the Cincinnati Red Stockings were established as the first professional baseball team and were then dissolved after the 1870 season. The then player-manager, Harry Wright, then went to Boston, Massachusetts at the invitation of the Boston Red Stockings founder where they officially formed the Boston Red Stockings. After winning several of the league's championships, the Boston Red Stockings became one of the National League's charter franchises in 1876, sometimes referred to as the “Red Caps”. It later came to be called the Beaneaters in 1883. The team was destroyed in 1901 when the American League began to offer contracts to players, causing many of the team members to jump ship. In 1907, the team name changed to the Doves (per media influence) and later the Rustlers in 1911. In 1912, the team became the Braves.
